Juliet Takes a Breath follows our heroine from U.S. coast to U.S. coast, finding heartbreak, disappointment, new love interests, and a whole lot of self-discovery along the way. I love this story because it's as much about code switching as it is about any of those other things. We learn along with Juliet that while everyone (including the reader) may expect her to be a different way or a different person, she doesn't owe them that satisfaction. And if she tries to contort herself to provide that satisfaction she will never be happy.
It's a big concept to take on, and Gabby Rivera is absolutely up to the challenge. Her writing is smart and full of heart and humor, without sacrificing impact. I saw myself and my experience in this book, in a way that I hadn't seen myself in a book in a long time, and I am profoundly grateful that Gabby Rivera chose to share it with the world.Juliet Takes a Breath follows our heroine from U.S. coast to U.S. coast, finding heartbreak, disappointment, new love interests, and a whole lot of self-discovery along the way. Zombeavers is exactly what it sounds like- a horde of zombified beavers terrorizing a group of 20 somethings. Like any good b-horror movie it doesn't take itself too seriously and does a nice job of playing with horror movie tropes. The gore factor is medium to strong so this one is not for the faint of stomach.Zombeavers is exactly what it sounds like- a horde of zombified beavers terrorizing a group of 20 somethings. The Tea Dragon Society was such an enjoyable read with an inconspicuously diverse cast of characters! The story is totally charming and touches themes of friendship, duty, and the importance of preserving cultural traditions.

Follow September and her friends on her journey to save Fairyland from a Marquess gone bad! I love the September's adventures in Fairyland because our heroine is smart, resourceful, compassionate, and determined. Valente's writing style evokes Lewis Carroll without being derivative. David Lynch at his David Lynch-iest. Our protagonist navigates relationships with self and others in a strange, dystopian-looking world. Shot over several years and with minimal dialogue, this movie is an unnerving classic of the genre and very thought provoking, to say the least.David Lynch at his David Lynch-iest. The Manchurian Candidate is a favorite of my dad's and I hadn't seen it until just recently. I was blown away! Bad Machinery is a great read-alike for both Stevenson's Lumberjanes and Allison's later series, Giant Days. Realistic characters and situations with just a touch of the supernatural, very enjoyable.

I am and always will be a sucker for CGI dinosaurs, and Extreme Dinosaurs could have used more, well, extreme dinosaurs. That said, having been maintained only a casual awareness of what is happening in the field of paleontology in the last decade or so, I found these documentaries very interesting and informative. I give it one and a half out of two giant claws attached to tiny arms.I am and always will be a sucker for CGI dinosaurs, and Extreme Dinosaurs could have used more, well, extreme dinosaurs. A self-help book like only Augusten Burroughs could write- funny, dry, self-depricating and at the same time self-aggrandizing, and still oddly touching. The author's voice comes through clearly and he does offer some thought provoking advice. I enjoyed this film very much, and it made me want to read some of David Foster Wallace's work (which it turns out I also enjoy very much). Jason Segal gave an impressive performance, showing range I didn't know he had.

What I appreciated most about this novel is its nuanced treatment of complicated issues- child welfare, family, addiction, illicit drug manufacture and trade, consent, and safety. The novel leaves space for the reader to form their own conclusions, as opposed to directing the reader on what to think. Beautifully written, and like the characters that narrate each chapter, I found myself watching and holding onto the small moments of tenderness that break through the chaos and confusion. What I appreciated most about this novel is its nuanced treatment of complicated issues- child welfare, family, addiction, illicit drug manufacture and trade, consent, and safety.
