This book brings us a poetic exploration of colors, seasons and nature from a young child’s point of view. A young girl observes and interacts with the natural world in a fresh and thoughtful way, appreciating the blue of sky and sea, the gold of grass, and the gray of rainstorms. Eventually, she sprouts into a tree - at least, in her dreams - and experiences the seasons of the year. Her observations of the world can inspire readers to be attentive and meditative – to wonder at what is right in front of us and just beyond our view. This book brings us a poetic exploration of colors, seasons and nature from a young child’s point of view. Daniel Finds a Poem is really two books in one. First, it’s a book about discovering poetry and second, it’s a book about animals in their natural habitat.
Daniel sees a sign on a post next to the public park that says, "Poetry in the Park”. He doesn't know what poetry is, so he asks all his animal friends in the park. The friends he has made in nature help him start to understand what poetry is. Spider says that poetry is “morning dew when it glistens.” For Squirrel, it is “when crisp leaves crunch.” Frog sees it as “a cool pool to dive into.”
As Daniel listens to all of the creatures, he realizes that he has created a poem, one that lets him see poetry everywhere just as they do.Daniel Finds a Poem is really two books in one. First, it’s a book about discovering poetry and second, it’s a book about animals in their natural habitat.

I love how this book names a word like, "SMART" and then describes what it means! Curious? Why? Check it out!

Sometimes it's hard to make a new friend, no matter how hard you try. This is a wonderful to begin a conversation about making friends and solving problems.

This is an almost wordless book just waiting for a story to be cooked up! What kinds of things do you put in your soup?

Shapes and shadows by the light of the moon, and flashlight, too! What type of sounds does the night watchman hear? A great conversation starter for other people who work at night to keep us safe while we sleep!

A letter, a word, a sentence, a story, a book...I can read! It's hard to learn to read when the letters look like squiggly lines and scuttling insects, with too many legs and eyes. This would be a wonderful book to use for all ages, or older toddlers. Pictures are clear and easy to see, not too busy. Many things on the pages to talk about and relate to the children's lives.

I would not use this book in storytime and recommend it for older children. There are many word bubbles on each page which will make it confusing to younger children. Great for one-on-one with older children.

So many favorite parts in this book. I love bear's pinecone party hat! Giving their "new friends" (humans) a welcome party. YIKES! And when the humans run away, they have a splendid time anyway!

Another winning story about friends by Karma Wilson. So many questions could be asked. So many connections to children's lives and feelings. Great vocabulary like frets, fusses, scurries, hibernate...and on and on.

Big, bigger, biggest. These are wonderful words that can be easily added to young children's vocabulary by playing with items at home that are different sizes. Use the words small, smaller, smallest too!

What would you do if you moved into a new house and there was a walrus in the bathtub? This book would be great one-on-one or family storytime. Lots of action in the pictures and wonderful humor.
