A very typical ghost story but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's a quick and easy read perfect for a lazy day when you don't have a lot going on. I really liked Hill's writing style. She wrote in the style of classic Gothic novels…

A classic ghost story with the most chilling ending I've read in a while.

This is another creepy page-turner that will keep you intrigued until the final, dark twist. The Woman in Black was published in 1983, but it reads like a classic Victorian ghost story. The story begins with a family gathered around the…

This wasn’t a bad book. It was mediocre-good. It’s a book that stays with you though, regardless of how you rate it. I was hoping for a little more of the scare-factor, but it was really about a ghost and a man’s courage to confront it…

A quick creepy thriller which I recommend.

I really liked this book. However, if you are remembering any aspect of the movie they made forget it before you read this. This is a great example of the changes movies make. It was spooky and creepy story written in the style of the…

I think I've been reading too many ghost stories as of late. This one seemed to be the idea fodder for nearly the same sort of novel that I read a few weeks ago (check my reviews). The story isn't bad, but I found the writing to be…

Probably one of the best ghost stories I've read thus far.

I have only ventured into the thriller genre in the past few months. At 44, I decided to challenge myself, avoiding anything gory, and began with books like "The Woman in Cabin 10", "The River at Night" and "The Child finder". To my…

This had all the vibes of an old Victorian mystery--and it hit all the right notes for me. The "reveal" at the end creeped me out!

Given how well-known this book seems to be (including a theater and film adaptation) I was surprised by how slight it is - better described as a novella and easily read in one sitting. Pulling together all the familiar elements of a ghost…

Susan Hill's ghost story is a good one up to a point. For me, she falls down in explaining why the child was being driven away in a carriage at a time when it seemed unsafe to be crossing the causeway. And what the driver? Why did just he…

Well, to be honest, I have to wonder if maybe I ruined the book by watching the movie beforehand. Not that the movie was fantastic, mind you, but I think I just kept unconsciously comparing the two in mind. While the book definitely was…

I read this room mostly in a brightly lit room full of people and I will still shaken and creeped out.

I liked it. Short. Some grammatical errors. Hard to put down, since the entire book is leading up to something.

Using vivid and powerful descriptions, Susan Hill creates a sinister house and a horrifying ghost that consistently push Arthur Kipps to his limit. Moreover, the environment and the illustrations are so haunting; they pull the readers…

Written in the style of Wilkie Collins, "Woman in White", this is a ghost story. The setting is perhaps inspired by Holy Island in Northumbria, which is accessible only at low tide. It is well done for what it is.

Loved this book. It's a great creepy, scary book to read. Her descriptions of the places, sounds, smells, everything were spot on. I felt as if I was standing right there experiencing them. A great read.

Eek! I'm easily scared, so I certainly found this book creepy. Hill doesn't inspire fright with gouls popping out of nowhere, so much as with the atmosphere she creates, which was very eerie. I found the ending a bit unfulfilling, though,…

An evocative ghost story in the Gothic style that provides all of its scares via atmosphere and a slow build up of suspense rather then relying on blood and gore. The perfect read for a dark and stormy night.

In 1990, on a trip to London, I went to see a theatrical production of "A Women In Black." I didn't know what it was, but it was the most convenient show fior which tickets were available. I didn't expect much. I just wanted to go the…

Good old-fashioned Gothic novel, creepy and atmospheric. Best read alone on a cold blustery night for maximum effect. No gore, yay!
