This thriller shows that Joe Hill learned much from his father when it comes to writing (yes, Joe Hill is Stephen King's son). Heavy foreshadowing, strong characterization, and the smart use of humor make this an absolute winner.

“Humanity is worse than flies. If even one dried nugget of offal survives the flames, we’ll be swarming all over it. Fighting about who owns it and selling the most fragrant chunks to the wealthy and the gullible.” Stephen King's The…

Written by Joe Hill. Narrated by Kate Mulgrew. Well, what are you waiting for? A plague where people randomly burst into flames has humanity at its feet. The world has done its traditional post-apocalyptic division into crazies and norms.…

love the book, which had an allure similar to his father's best books like the stand and also the giver. definite read for Stephen King fans!

I loved this book. The journey this book takes you on is epic. So many ethical questions are packed into the journey of a group trying to survive the dragonscale virus. Hill does an amazing job at visualizing not only the barren, fired…

I have fallen right into this book I love a Big Read and tend to devour them when they're good. I sat on the couch all day yesterday reading and am only 2/3 through. IMO It is a cross between Stephen King's The Stand and Robert McCammon's…

I cannot recommend this book enough. Totally involved in the story and the characters from the first pages, was sad when I realized that the book was almost done. If you like Stephen King's work <wink> you are going to enjoy this!

Sorry to say- a lot of unnecessary detail in areas. Jumpy. Wasn't really drawn into the story

A story similar to zombie apocalypse only the virus causes the infected to spontaneously combust. Some of the infected learn how to control the triggers which causes one to burn alive. The story was predictable and over the top. I…

From Joe Hill, The Fireman describes a world obliterated by a spore based plague, named Dragonscale, that sets its victims and the world aflame. The survivors of the first wave of the illness must decide if Dragonscale is something to be…

Great read. I was surprised how much I wanted to continue reading. My only comment is that this is clearly Harper's story but the title is The Fireman...maybe he started with the title then wrote the book! There is another comment on here…

Great idea for a book and it started out wonderful. I was really engaged until the filthy language distracted me. Finally I had to toss it in the "I'm not going to read this" pile. For me, horrid language is a distraction and does not…

This is a behemoth of a book. And so much of it was unnecessary. You know the rule about writing? That if you hang a gun on the wall, you better use it? Well, I guess it doesn't apply. Or the rule about brevity.... it being the soul of wit…

It's Present Day-ish and there's a mysterious disease that causes people to SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUST! I like Joe Hill's style, and interestingly enough this was the first proper novel of his I have read after already consuming his truly…

Can't believe I'm thinking this, let alone saying it, but I think Joe may be just as good, if not sometimes better than his father! I enjoyed the first book of his I read (Heart Shaped Box) and also read Nos4A2, and am currently…

I am overall glad that I picked up The Fireman, however I enjoyed NOS4A2 much more. Which sucks because I hate to compare books- but it was a tad inescapable for me at the moment. I would put this one among the post-apocalyptic,…

I'm not sure I see this as horror per se. To me horror means monsters and the supernatural. Hill's Heart-shaped box fits the genre but I'm not sure about this one. This is about a very real scenario where a fungus running rampant in the…

This is one of the best horror books I've read in a while. The characters were vivid and realistic. The descriptions were detailed and drew me into the story. It was nerve-racking in the best way, filling me with hope, dread, excitement,…

Although this book was well-written and the plot was interesting it could have been about 100 pages shorter. The story was fascinating and I wanted to see where it would lead but there were times when I found myself bored and anticipating…

This book was very beautifully written, very lyrical with an easy rhythm and I didn't mind the length at all. The characters are vivid, especially the ones you hate! And that's what I liked most of all, that this book caused a reaction in…

Like his father Stephen King, Joe too writes a haunting, beautiful, and quite verbose apocalyptic love story with vivid, memorable characters. Unfortunately now I need to add yet another to my growing list of authors whose full catalog I…

What’s scarier than a flu that can kill you? A flu that can burn you alive from the inside out as it kills you. Since “Everybody caught a fatal flu and died” would be a pretty short book, Joe Hill’s new doorstopper, “The Fireman”, is…
