What an amazing story - after being forced apart by their families, they find each other decades later and find that they are still very much in love. They have to make some difficult decisions, but in the end, it all works out. Beautify told, wonderful illustrations.

Denied love. It's a story that we hear about every once in a while. But never does it become a less sad affair. Bingo Love has its own unique version though. Hazel and Mari met when they were young, but being from a conservative African-American community in 1963 meant that their relationship was pretty much doomed to cause an uproar. As Mari speaks from the future, she looks back on this time with a bittersweet fondness. Flash forward many years, and things have changed, both of these, now aging woman, are free to be honest. That doesn't mean it is easy though, they have families, but they are families that are able to accept things over time. Bingo Love has a generally warm tone thanks to the loving voice of Mari, and the art with its sweet designs and colours. The relationship of these two women may have started in their youth, but it only truly began in their golden years, thus distinguishing this comic further from other romance titles. Still the primary audience for this title is young adults, as the style will appeal more to them. This is a truly lovely story.

Colorful bright art made this LGBT+ graphic novel shine as it follows two queer teens, and later, as married women, with humor and love. The theme of sacrifice and duty is incredibly touching, especially seeing how it impacts the characters and their families.

A beautifully illustrated romance between two girls who meet at church bingo and become friends in school and are forced apart by their families. A truthful look at the complicated way humans love and it will leave your heart warm.

High school sweethearts reunite in their later years in this sweet love story featuring two strong women of color. Pick this up if you are looking for a quick read and love graphic novels that center the experience of queer characters. This light romance (not explicit at all but there are several illustrations of the two main characters kissing) feels reminiscent of some of the relationship dynamics at play in the TV series Grace & Frankie.

This romantic graphic novel is a must-read for anyone who wants to swoon and just fall in love with the characters. The story is totally precious and endearing with colorful, bubblegum artwork. --Taylor (see more of my picks by following WoodneathTaylor)

A very sweet book celebrating the love story of two black, queer women. It's mostly a light, optimistic read, but there's still a serious treatment of the conflicts and challenges these characters must face. And as others have mentioned--the ending will wreck you (albeit gently). Bingo Love is a great #OwnVoices addition to the current landscape of graphic novels.

Don't mind me, I just have something in my eye...

This book is too cute to cope with. It's not a complex story, but it is a desperately needed one, and I loved every second of reading it.

It was cute fun read, I was actually one of the backers for the kickerstarter that help fund the book, so I also got to read two of the three side stories referenced in the book (I think they had to replace the artist for the husband's bonus comic so it's still in progress) they were also nice and short but not necessary to enjoy and understand the comic. It's awesome to see two women (women of color even!) be the focus of a Queer love story, usually a popular gay love story features two white boys usually teenagers but this story is set after they've grown up and lived their life with a husband and/or family, that even older people can still find love or rather accept their sexuality (and sensuality) and go for the love they've denied themselves.

Pros: The art was really cute, the characters were diverse (so much natural hair!!!) I think there's another volume in the make with focus on Mari since volume 1 was centered around Hazel.

Cons: the writing could get clunky and it would just pull me out of the story, relied on a few worn out tropes, towards the end I was reminded of The Notebook with Mari's situation and it kinda dampened my like just a tad

A beautiful love story in graphic novel format featuring strong black queer women.

A beautiful love story that it both a quick read and bittersweet.

This quick read is a sweet, intersectional love story with lovely illustrations. The dialogue is a little clunky and awkward, but it is not so distracting that you can’t still enjoy the characters and the story.

What a sweet, emotional little read. It was so wonderful to see the main character's realistic struggles with family members' perspectives, and to see them resolve healthily and graciously. Coming out late in life is a rare narrative, and this author did such a beautiful job of navigating it for their readers.

Such an uplifting, wonderful, and vulnerable story about overcoming and surviving a very homophobic era of history. I couldn't get enough of Hazel and Mari and can't wait to read this all over again.

During Pride this month I implore everyone to check out Bingo Love. It is such a sweet, heartbreaking story about two women who meet in high school, fall in love, go their separate ways, and then find each other again. This is such a beautiful, touching story, and one that provides such wonderful understanding when it comes to love and how it can transcend time. Love is love is love is love.

Bingo Love tells a sweet love story the likes of which are rare in romance novels, much less graphic novels--that of two black women who meet as teens, realize their friendship could be so much more, are separated for fifty years, and have the good fortune to be reunited with each other when "the world is finally ready for our kind of love." The spark is still there, and it makes just a lovely, swoony little read.

Lovely little GN! The illustrations are like a visual 'hug and a squeeze' for folks who rarely see their body types rendered with such loving care. The storyline embraces both the constancy of love and its reshaping as we we grow and change, touching on prejudice, marriage, duty, family, divorce, aging and losing loved ones. My only regret about the book is that its brevity robs the reader of the opportunity to really know each character more fully, which weakens the impact of the important story shared here. Still, a great addition to the growing body of GNs exploring the LGBTQ experience.

In this beautiful graphic novel, teens Hazel and Mari meet and become fast friends in the 1960s. However, the pair are torn apart when their feelings for each other are revealed to family with the power to separate them. Fastforward nearly fifty years, when both have children and grandchildren. The two meet randomly at bingo, and can't help but revisit their lost love. What happens in this kind of situation, where both women have families and friends who might not understand? How has their love lasted such a separation? A quick, engrossing read, this story is heartbreaking in some places, but touches your soul in others.
