A fictional chronicle of life in Germany, from 1919 to 1982, as reflected in the fluctuating fortunes of the members of one family, initially peasant-farmers, in the fictitious village of Schachbach in the Rhineland. An extraordinary succession of mostly ordinary events and characters--history seen from ground level--vividly acted by a huge cast of both professional and nonprofessional actors.

Except the Rhineland isn't in the south.

Really long, but great, chronicle with excellent southern dialect. If you want to brush up on your German, it's great for jogging your memory. Some characters you don't like, some you feel sorry for ... it's just a true depiction of life. Actually shed tears at the crow they swallowed so easily, with their perpetual optimism, except for Grandma, at the end of the war. Could easily imagine my own rural family during this time. Present day population of 6,000. They really didn't have much of a clue. Looking forward to seeing the rest, a little past midway.
