This story of a technological paradise suddenly turned nightmare is a genuine shocker. For $1,000 a day, vacationers can indulge whims at the "theme park" called Westworld where the gunhands and dance-hall girls are all robots programmed to serve the guests' violent and lustful fantasies--until something goes wrong with their circuitry.

This movie is as much a comedy as serious Science Fiction, especially at its beginning with the pseudo-advertisement clip. Reviews rave of its groundbreaking cinematography, though there are other examples such as "2001, A Space Odyssey" from 1968 and "The Andromeda Strain" from 1971 based on Crichton's novel of the same name. Both of these films, especially "2001" show futuristic tech in a true realistic fashion. Several reviewers claimed the tech of "Westworld" 1973 was distracting to their overall viewing pleasure because of its obsolescence, but it was par for the course in 1973. The old tech alone, however, should not be a reason for its low viewer ratings.

Truly Yul Brynner is the star of this film, especially in the climactic ending scenes. Without him the film wouldn't be much at all, akin to a made for TV movie.

✅ I hadn't seen this flick, but I figured if Tiny Gunn (⬇️) didn't like it, it had to be good, and, sure enough, it is. The story by Crichton is a grabber. Brynner is terrific as usual. The sequel, Futureworld, is just as good, but a little brainier, with less action.

i am unfamiliar with the hbo series; this movie was very sexy for the time. sad to see yul brynner; he died not long after of lung cancer, and recorded one of the first anti-tobacco public service announcements against tobacco, after his terminal diagnosis. if you dig the man, i can recommend a police comedy he did, which also starred burt reynolds, dom deluise, and raquel welch: FUZZ! It was filmed in Boston, and is hilarious.

I was impressed with this 1967 film and became much more engrossed later on to the point of some tense anxiety over the outcome. The first part was dated to today's gimmicks and Brolin was so less attractive - or maybe that was intentional. Love, love, love Yul Brynner, always have, he made head shaving sexy decades before popularity. Dick Van Patten was well cast as the comedy. I've never seen the HBO series.

This is the original Westworld movie to JJ Abram's popular Westworld TV series today; only, this original is more comical due to the age of the tech. This was like watching the vintage William Shatner & Leonard Nemoy Star Trek series for film, acting, props, and PG-rated script. It was commical to watch the command center computer screen savers. Curious that I've never seen this on TV as a rerun. It has Yul Brynner (of Russian descent American FYI) If you enjoy today's Westworld series, I'd recommend watching this original for its cinematic history.

IMO - The word "AWFUL!!" pretty much sums up this garbage SyFy film from 1973 in a nutshell.

Presented like it was a "Made-For-TV" movie - "Westworld" amounted to being nothing but a big yawn from start to finish.

One of this SyFy film's biggest drawbacks was that its story was only set 10 years into the future (1983), yet, director/writer, Michael Crichton actually expected the audience to completely suspend disbelief and accept that the performance and the human-like realism of the androids was way beyond the scope of one's wildest dreams. (Spare me!)

Well - I say "Shame! Shame! on Crichton" for foisting this nonsense on the gullible spectator and expecting them to buy this baloney without giving it any intelligent thought.

Over time, forgot that Crichton’s amusement park consisted of Westworld (the American Old West), Medievalworld (medieval Europe), and Romanworld (the ancient Roman city of Pompeii), think adult scifi versions of “Fantasy Island 1977” or Disney World’s different theme parks in Orlando. Agree with everyone who commented that the material was dated, see appending note. However, it is also amazing to compare how much the computing technology and sci-fi androids have evolved over the years. As a sequel to the film, watch the Special features: 48 minutes of 1980 "Beyond Westworld" TV series pilot “Westworld Destroyed," which exposed the ideologue behind the disaster in the Yul Brynner movie.

Note: Dated? It was released as a motion picture in 1973, same year IBM introduced the Winchester disk drive with 30 MB capacity, all computer monitors used monochrome VDTs, stereo power amplifiers were powered with vacuum tubes, first Star Wars film was released 4 years later in 1977, flat panel TV/monitors were not affordable until after 2000 …

Mediocre movie. We don't have cable so it was okay to kill an evening. Enjoyed Yul Brynner in the King and I and in Seven Samurai, but he was wooden in this. Writing could have been better.

Another stupid movie where ALL the protagonists are male. The only women are female robot sex slaves or free prostitutes available for use by the males.

Michael Crichton was a total misogynist who believed in male supremacy and it is reflected in this silly film.

"Westworld", 1973, was the creation of the marvelously talented Michael Crichton. The movie was way ahead of its time. The concept of vast arrays of computers controlling artificial creations is well within our modern concept of possibility. But 1973 was long before the PC. Watching real people interacting with computerized horses, women, snakes would have stretched people's imagination in 1973. As for the stars here, I was never impressed with James Brolin or Richard Benjamin. But Yul Brynner is the real star here. He looked very taught and mechanical in his movements. He dominated every scene he was in. I don't think we ever took our eyes off him whenever he was on screen. Yul always had a look of imperiousness. The Russian-born Brynner took over whoever and whatever was around him.
No one was going to dominate Yul in any scene. His only drawback was being a short statured man. Sadly, Yul died at the age of 65 from lung cancer caused by cigarettes. Before his death, Brynner made a television commercial dedicated to the stupidity of smoking cigarettes.

Chief Supervisor: Almost as complicated as living organisms. In some cases, they have been designed by other computers. We don't know exactly how they work.
