Focusing on eight iconic works of art, this series reveals the history of visual imagination through the ages. A combination of reconstruction, photography and storytelling transport the viewer back to the intense moments when great works were conceived and born: the murderous, messianic world of Baroque Rome; opulent, parvenu Amsterdam; paranoid, revolutionary Paris; Victorian England suffocating beneath riches and righteousness; the madhouses and brothels of Provence; the carnage of civil war Spain; 1950s New York, caught between Cold War jitters and Manhattan glitter. In each place, a great artist is backed into a corner, facing a crisis, given a chance to confound his rivals, enemies and critics one more time.

There are moments in this series that bring me to tears. Very powerful and passionate. Rembrandt, Rothko and especially Caravaggio are true insights into what makes an artist what he is, more than just the paint on a canvas it is the inner soul an turmoil that define a man and his art>. 420 . I saw the piece that Hangs in the Knights Templar church in Malta when I was in the service it will bring you to your knee's truly astonishing ~

Carravagio !!!!! 420

(I only watched the first two episodes.) Anyone who thinks that Caravaggio was a sweetie, or that the renaissance was a peaceful time, should get a load of these grisly dramatic recreations. Very little interest shown in art, strangely. The BBC that brought you 'Civiliation' now takes the slickly sensational approach. (Do I misjudge the rest of the series?)

An amazing series of films. The photography is excellent, and Schama is the perfect narrator: informed, engaged, passionate, and not above a joke or an informal aside.

Fantastic series, very memorable. Set me on a path to the rest of Schama's work and inspired me to plan art museum visits.

One of the very best series on art I have ever seen. Powerful, thought-provoking, moving. Several of the episodes moved me to tears. The episodes on Carravagio, Van Gogh and Rothko are especially moving and profound. Made me want to immediately read more about these artists and fly around the world looking at their work. Made me want to enroll at Columbia University to take courses from Prof. Schama. Highly recommended.

A great series - Caravaggio & Rothko are especially good episodes. Simon Schama delivers the goods once again.
