More of a lone wolf camp attendee, this young man decides to take a break from the day-to-day life he's been expected to live to try surviving off the land in the wild.

No movie will inspire you more to go outdoors and seek adventure. It is based on the tragic, true story of Chris McCandless.

A real nut case. Burning money and trying to live off the land. Running around in Alaska with no shirt on, I doubt it. Good thing the bus was there, but where was the road leading to it? Was it dropped in by helicopter? Was good to see Hal Holbrook. Movie was way too long, 148 minutes. Be prepared for lots of flashbacks.

Regardless of one's personal thoughts on Chris McCandless' actions. This film does a great job depicting the "Self Reliance" and liberation from society that Emerson so often wrote about. It causes us to take a step back from our lives everyday and think about our surroundings and the society we live in.

Most either love or hate this film. The latter just feel that the protagonist is a fool. Ironically, this is what the film (and book that this is based on) is attempting to say, that this real person realized too late that he was living life already to the fullest and didn't need to prove to himself how much life is worth living. The other main irony is someone who wanted to live life to the fullest has such a senseless and tragic end. Those who still trek to see his "magic bus" of course fail to understand the message of this well made and sad movie.

Great movie.

Exploration of a young, disenchanted idealist who shows both sensitivity and navel-gazing at the same time. Based on a true story: well-told with a charming lead who donated his law school fund to charity and then travels across the Western US in search of finding himself, a la Thoreau. Along the way, he meets with mostly kindred outsiders who've also "left" society and respond warmly to his joy in life--as opposed to his parents, who are enmeshed in an abusive marriage that affects him and his sister. He meets his match, however, in Mother Nature as he attempts to survive off the harsh Alaska wilderness without truly considering/planning for what he's up against. Beautiful cinematography/nature scenes (marred by a flashback ending that is visually hard to watch) and good pacing.

I liked the movie. Should have done better with planning his adventure though. There is a lot of poisonous plants in the wild so beware read and learn all you can before the end.

Since this was based on an actual event, I opted to watch it with no real expectations. Turned out to be a pretty good flick with a wide geographical scope. It's worth a view.

You should read the book as well.

Long, boring, preachy story of a young man running away from his dysfunctional family. Great music & great scenery, though.

McCandless is a polarizing figure, most figure him to be either a fool or a hero. The film leans toward the hero end of the scale and is well shot and acted.

Watch "Alone in the Wilderness" for an interesting contrast of how Dick Proenneke survived thirty years alone in Alaska.

Ron Franz (all choked up): "I'm gonna miss you when you go." Christopher McCandless: "I'll miss you too, Ron. But you're wrong if you think that the joy of life comes principally from human relationships. God's place is all around us -- it's in everything, and anything we can experience. People just need to change the way they look at those things." Ron Franz: "Yeah. I'm, I'm gonna take stock of that. You know I am. ...I am. But I wanna tell you something. From the bits and pieces I've put together... you know, from what you've told me about your family -- your mother and your dad... and I know you've got your problems with the church too... But there's some kinda bigger thing we can all appreciate, and it sounds like you don't mind calling it God... But, when you forgive... you love. And when you love, God's light shines on you."
