Jim Rockford is an ex-con who has an instinct for solving cases. He is as cool as his Pontiac Firebird. From his mobile home in Malibu, this wisecracking private eye takes on the cases of the lost and the dispossessed. His cases usually turn out to be more difficult and dangerous than he initially imagines, and he often ends up in situations over his head.

I hate to be the one to say it--since I love Garner--but either the writers lost their way or James Garner was tired of acting. Last season was boring, slow, lots of empty dialogues, lots of actors acting instead of Garner. We did a lot of fast forwarding. A real pity. The last episode got very close to reviving the series' flair.

Jim Rockford, an ex-con pardoned for an armed robbery he didn't commit, is a private investigator specializing in closed cases. His office is his oversized trailer next to the Malibu pier. His pricey fee of $200 a day plus expenses makes it hard for him to attract clients, but he is well worth it. He is sometimes assisted by his father Joseph (a.k.a. Rocky), his best friend Sgt. Dennis Becker of the LAPD, his lawyer/girlfriend Beth Davenport, and his former cell-mate Evelyn "Angel" Martin.
