Martha Boyle and Olive Barstow could have been friends. But they weren't and now all that is left are eerie connections between two girls who were in the same grade at school and who both kept the same secret without knowing it. Now Martha can't stop thinking about Olive. A family summer on Cape Cod should help banish those thoughts; instead, they seep in everywhere. And this year Martha's routine at her beloved grandmother's beachside house is complicated by the Manning boys. Jimmy, Tate, Todd, Luke, and Leo. But especially Jimmy. What if, what if, what if, what if? The world can change in a minute.

This is a unique coming of age tale that revolves around the death of Olive Barstow, a young girl whom Martha Boyle, the main character, did not get the chance to befriend. Olive's mother gives Martha Olive's journal. Martha thinks on Olive from that moment on. After visiting her grandmother, Godbee, Martha slowly learns who she really is by revealing one thing about herself each day and the most profound revealing is her desire to be a writer just like Olive. Martha has adventures with the Manning boys who reside near Godbee's summer home and ends the summer wanting to return over the winter holidays. There are a few racy moments and curse words in the book not suited for immature readers. This book put me in the mind of The Book of One Hundred Truths and Belle Prater's Boy.
