Mellow mix of guitar, bass, keyboard and percussion in all tracks.

The song structures are simple, the lyrics unpretentious, the production minimalist, the mood slow and quiet. Yet the XX still manages to build a remarkable level of tension, momentum and atmosphere in this deceptively simple-sounding album.

This album starts off great, then loses steam towards the middle. It's enjoyable on the whole, but I'm left wishing they could have maintained the energy that was present on the first 3-4 tracks...

Writing reviews for CDs from the library is tough. Many disks take a number of listens before you decide if you are hooked or not. The XX was like that. This was a very good CD. But it may not be what you expect. It fits in better in the chillout genre then the alternative rock genre. It reminded me of a cross between Air and Royksopp but with more guitar. Certain songs are very catchy, others less so. I think if I had of listened to it more or had more chances to listen to the whole disc in one sitting, I would have liked it more. Still, if you like your rock on the softer but still hip, cool, electronic side (sort of like the band Stars I guess too), then you'll like this album.

This band is onto something very special in the indie rock genre [other than Vampire Weekend]which just made my heart "fuzzy and warm". The Ex-ex's LP is worth pursuing!
