Kenneth Fearing was better known as a poet, and as a drinker, but he did write one classic thriller, THE BIG CLOCK, which was made into a film of 1987, which starred Kevin Costner, Gene Hackman, and Sean Young---NO WAY OUT. / " But one night, Dr. Bennell overhears Billy speaking to a friend when there aren't any patrons around. The black shoeshine man reveals the truth about himself, parodying his own antics: 'Please let me kiss your feet! Le'me kiss'em!' Dr. Bennell has a terrible realization: ' Never before had i heard such ugly, bitter, and vicious contempt....contempt for the people taken in by his daily antics, but even more for himself, the man who supplied the servility the bought from him.' As with most books of this nature, the fun is in reading about old faves and discovering other titles (new and old) to explore. At only 100 titles, Thrillers is pretty focused, but still runs the gamut from Homers's Odyssey to (most recent title reviewed in the book) Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. Lots of fun!
