Ralph Roberts has an incurable case of insomnia, but lack of sleep is the least of his worries. Each night he stays awake, Ralph witnesses more of the odd activity taking place in Derry after dark than he wants to know. The nice young chemist up the street beats his wife and has delusions about beings he calls "The Centurions". A madman with a knife is trying to kill him, he's sure. And on the night May Locher died, one of the two bald men coming out of her house had a pair of scissors in his hand. What does it all mean? Ralph doesn't quite know. But the bizarre visions he's been having keep getting more intense, the strange deaths in Derry have just begun, and Ralph knows he isn't hallucinating.

This book is strange, even for King. It focuses on an often ignored sector of the world, senior citizens. Sometimes the plot veers off in such bizarre directions, it's almost as if came from a party storytelling game where you go around the room and each person adds a sentence to the tale. But there are some very touching themes on aging, loss, facing your own mortality, finding love at an older age, and of course, insomnia. This is certainly not for the impatient reader. To give you an idea of how bizarre and metaphysical this book is, the Greek Fates (Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos) are featured as characters in the book (not the Fates themselves but characters who represent them). I listened to the audiobook, and while Eli Wallach seems to be the perfect voice for it, it's a very raspy voice which can make it hard to hear on my morning bus commute. He tends to trail off a bit, speaking quieter at ends of sentences. And others mentioned the music played in the background, even while the narrator is still speaking--it is often *very* shrill and kind of distracting. I enjoyed the overall experience of listening to this audiobook.

Your typical Stephen King novel..a bit of a convoluted plot, with a love story twist, a few side tracks that give the reader a break....overall quite enjoyable.

After losing interest in Stephen King after the Dark Half (1989) I've been going back and reading some I missed. This is a good one. I loved the characters. They are brave, smart, strong and (drum roll) senior citizens! The story is interesting though not exactly scary. However, the dissonent, jangly music that comes on sometimes during the audio book almost made me jump out of my skin.
