In this sequel to Card's bestselling novel "Empire," President Averell Torrent launches America into a get-tough, this-world-is-our-empire foreign policy stance. When Captain Bartholomew "Cole" Coleman sees the danger Torrent poses to American democracy and the potential disasters involved in his foreign military adventures, he quickly runs afoul of Torrent and, while on the run, finds proof that Torrent orchestrated a presidential assassination.

As is the case in many of Card's works, some of the youngest characters in this story captivated me, and in my opinion they stole the show. In the midst of a world gone hideously wrong, two boys from completely different backgrounds choose to take terrible risks helping the victims of an epidemic. Their character arcs, woven throughout the bigger picture, made for some of the most powerful fiction I've ever read. Just don't enter this story expecting a light, happy read. Card respects children too much to give them an artificially easy time, especially when they take such a courageous stand.

I've heard recent rumors about Card loosing it. I'm not surprised by GeahkBurchill's review.

This book was appalling. I have always thought of OSC as being a pretty reasonable and even-handed writer but this one smacks of bent intentions and even madness. A poorly plotted book with a heavy-handed political message that tries to alter reality to suite the writer's fanatical ideology. This is Card attempting to become Ayn Rand and failing.
