For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world's great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It's up to a Marine staff sergeant and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they've ever encountered before.

I really liked this movie. I know this might be a crazy stretch but it's like ID4 and Saving Private Ryan and Starship Troopers and District 9 had a baby...it would be this movie to me. Good cast and action, not a bad way to spend a Sunday.

Watched this in cinemas back in 2011 and again recently on Netflix. There was a historical issue with Los Angeles which occurred on late February 24th, to early February 25, 1942 where a bunch of UFOs or orbs were seen over Los Angeles and there was a military response to firing at the UFOs or orbs of light. This movie takes that history and puts it to another level of "what if". There are some statements in the movie itself that have the concepts of aliens mining the planet for water, or that there are drones controlled by a mother-ship that could be interesting if researched further. I'm more interested in the intrigue behind this movie and think more could have been done to reference the actual historical event, and portrayed that as probes or scouts leading to this invasion, and I think that may have made the movie more interesting.

Haven't seen you in several years and was looking forward to watching it again. Unforunately,
when I opened the case, there was no dvd! I called & talked with the librarian, Megan who informed me that most likely someone had stolen it. REALLY! Steal from a library. Wish there was some way to catch these thiefs!

I expected this movie to be another one of those shoot up alien/video game type movies with poor acting and story line. I was wrong. It actually is a good movie. The acting and story is good. Of course Hollywood has to insert it's affirmative action in to it. They needed a woman in it so they inserted a woman Air Force Tech Sergeant. How many Woman in the Air Force can repel out of a Helicopter in full Battle gear? I have nothing against women. Just stating the facts. It is a good movie for the Corps. I am the Son of a Marine and an old Soldier now........

A lot of cities are under attack by aliens and Los Angeles in one of them. Everybody on the beach is killed by aliens and the military is sent to battle with them. Civilians must be rescued at a police station, which is situated where aliens are. A military team is sent to rescue these civilians, and have three hours to do so. If they don’t successfully rescue them within three hours, the area will be bombed and the civilians die. The action is great, with explosions and firefights, it’s very intense and crazy. Great movie overall, and you’ll like it as long as you expect crazy action and not a very deep plot.

Agree with Yunaleska's comment that there should be no contest between today's military with conventional armaments and aliens with interstellar travel capability. Its entertainment value was on the camaraderie of solders and their heroics against all odds. For a much better alien attack film, check out Battleship which I rated a 4 star:

I watched this movie because the reviews suggested it might be worth it. My expectations weren't high, however. On the whole it was a stock combat movie identical to dozens of others made about everything from Vietnam to Africa, to the Middle East to the Balkans by film makers from Russia to Korea to the US. However, it didn't linger on the blood and guts, which is a plus, and most of the killing our guys were doing weren't humans. Also a plus. Generally it had a little John Wayne with a few crying kids and hints of pretty woman wanting to touch somewhere on the body of heroic man in uniform sort of thing. No gratuitous brain-matter closeups and no slow motions showing us what naked people do with their reproductive equipment, which put it a step ahead of 90% of the 21st century movie scene.
I was surprised to see Veronica Hamel [not high on the credits], star player in Hill Street Blues [1980s cops and robbers TV series]. Not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

I was not expecting much out of this movie and ending up really enjoying this movie. If you like sci-fi\action then you will really like this.

A war movie, very little else.

It's a recruiting tool for the United States Marine Corps and a proposal for a new 3rd person shooter video game rolled into one! Overly long with an overwrought, depressing film score that made me contemplate jumping off a bridge before I wisely (I think) removed this baby from my DVD player. Whew, THAT was a close one!
