Good film about Maruge, an 84 year man who wanted to go to school to learn to read. He encounters problems with the administration and parents concerned their children are not the focus of the primary school. I thought the sub-story about his Mau Mau activities very poignant and probably not too well known by Americans. Overall, it is an uplifting, heartwarming story about a man determined to learn and educate himself even at the stage of old-age--a reminder that we are all never too old to learn.

Maruge is an incredible man with determination and sense of humour despite the suffering and atrocities he faced during the 1950 for standing up in what he believed was right.

An absolutely fabulous tale of preserverance, hope, and life. Enjoyed every minute of Maruge's lessons!!

An intense and touching story. I found myself as moved by the school headmaster's plight to allow Maruge to attend school as I was by N'gan'ga Maruge himself. She puts herself out on a limb to do what is right for Maruge.

A man who's fought all his life, fights for the right to attend school at the age of 84. Simply beautiful and inspiring. His passion for education and his determination offers a lesson to all of us. Everyone has the right to an education, no matter how young, old, rich or poor.

A heartwarming movie which lets us know that no matter how old we get, we have to keep learning.

The movie is alright.... It is respectable to make a movie from real life events...

The first grader, a true story about an 84 year old Kimani Maruge and his quest for education...awesome!

This is a 2010 biographical drama directed by Justin Chadwick, based on the true story of Kimani Maruge---a Kenyan man who enrolled in elementary education at the age of 84 after the Kenyan government announced universal and free elementary education in 2003.
It is a profoundly gripping and engaging documentary-style film.

I found this story to be rather tedious and boring as it was told. Someone recommended it to me but I could not recommend it to anyone else.
