Great movie if you likebmovies such as "The Grand Hotel Budapest" or "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou" but I see no point to either. So quirky it makes no sense.
Enjoyed the ideas explored. Worth watching when you're in the mood for independent film.
Boring. And I usually love indie movies.
A profound, unusual, and challenging film. Not for those who like their movies linear and conventional, to say the least. But quite imaginative and surprising, with many scenes that bend the mind of the viewer. Also, rather poignant.
I liked "You and Me and Everyone We Know", but thought that this one went beyond it to a whole new level. I regret if some might not wish to follow. But everyone has different tastes, and this one is certainly more for those with eclectic ones.
i basically agree with everyone who complains about this film. i loved "me you and everyone we know," but as everyone else seems to point out: this one is just irritating, and not in a provocative way. been down this same road a number of times, and this was probably the least enjoyable trip. if you wanna see an interesting film about relationship problems try Bergman's Scenes From a Marriage. If that's not "quirky" enough for you, just watch Moonrise Kingdom a couple times. ok, i tried.
I'm with Greendreams on this one. The characters in this movie were so annoying, I just wanted to slap them. And this crap where they had the cat in the movie "talk" in this stupid voice...OMG, this was so inane. Why do some indie films have to be so affected and pretentious?
yuk . terrible, don't waste your time fell asleep on it
I watch a lot of Indie movies, and I am very tolerant of different approaches to story telling, but I have to warn people about this movie. Miranda July, actress, writer, director, who I enjoyed in "You, Me and Everybody Else" when many didn't, has brought a new level of self-indulgence and pretentiousness to this movie which I have rarely seen. This movie made my teeth hurt.
I sat through this movie so no one could accuse me of missing the punch line, but In my opinion, the only person this movie was made for was Miranda July, and I even wonder how she can put up with it.
This movie suffers from a terrible case of Indie-itis where the director/writer tries to amp up the level or quirkiness, weirdness and generally unlikable characters, making them unnatural and unreal, eccentric, unbelievable and manipulated for those purposes.
July does an acceptable job of directing the movie and it has acceptable production value. It's the content that is lacking in purpose, and just becomes more and more irritating to watch. I give this movie one star for its production, but negative 5 for wasting my time having to sit through it.
Like Lena Dunham (Girls, Tiny Furniture) this broad is one of us, that is, an underground person. Not straight. It’s great to see when they get a commercial thing off the ground. And don’t sell out. Oh, I’m sorry, Blacks and their Hip Hop say selling out is the smart thing to do, the Ghetto thing. OOh, I’m sorry, that’s just the idiot media again slurring my/our words again. ====== The opening dialogue is transcendent prescient stuff. Some more hits and misses, but it’s real and its just like so so , did I say ‘better’ than hip hop crap. I’m not talking about the good modern black mixing. Btw, ‘hip hop’ stole it all from dub in Jamaica in the ‘60’s anyway. And ruined it. They made it masculine (they changed the beat to 2, 4 eg.). ======= Anything I’ve seen/heard of Miranda is very stimulating and creative. Look her up. Of course, if you ‘don’t like that sort of thing...’ ........you could always try the ‘Tea Party’ version of awarenessness.
It was slightly better than I expected, but can Miranda July possibly be any more quirky? And why should I care about either Sophie or Jason? They were self-absorbed to the point of losing whatever personality they may have originally had. Really--did you notice either of them having a personality? Self-absorbed to the point that it never occurred to them to go *visit* the cat while it was in the hospital for a month. What a pair of ciphers.
