Like many couples, Michael and Jolene Zarkades face the pressures of everyday life - children, careers, bills, chores - even as their twelve-year marriage is faltering. Then Iraq erupts and Jolene is deployed leaving defense attorney Michael to be the single parent to their two girls - a role that's foreign to him.

As a mother, it agonizes Jolene to leave her family, but as a soldier she has always understood the true meaning of duty. In her letters home, she paints a rosy version of her life on the front lines, shielding her family from the truth. But war will change Jolene in ways that none could have foreseen. When tragedy strikes, Michael must face his darkest fear and fight a battle of his own - for everything that matters to his family.

A profoundly honest look at modern marriage and a dramatic exploration of the price of war on an ordinary American family, Home Front is a story of love, loss, heroism, honor and ultimately, hope.

I love Kristin Hannah's historical fiction, but hadn't read a contemporary novel of hers. I am glad I did. Let me tell you, I totally cried.

HOME FRONT explores the high costs of war on one military family. A tad long and the ending was a bit contrived, but still a worthwhile read.

Jolene Zarkades and her next-door neighbor, Tami Flynn have been BFFs since they were 18. They joined the army right out of high school and qualified for the high school to flight school helicopter-pilot training. Both women currently serve in the Washington State National Guard where they are sometimes called upon to fly search and rescue missions for lost hikers, etc.
Suddenly their unit, the Raptors, are called into service in Iraq. While both women are wives and mothers, their husbands couldn't be more different. Tami's husband, Carl is supportive about her career and upcoming deployment while Jo's Michael, is opposed to the war and resents her leaving the family. Going off to war in very different mind sets, Jo and Tami vow they will see each other through this deployment and make it home together. One night their helicopter is shot from the sky and both couples' worlds are turned upside down. Both women have been critically injured and are flown to a military hospital in Germany. As they fly to their wives bedsides, both Michael and Carl learn what it truly means to be a military family as they deal with the high cost of war.

Renew "Home Front" by Kristin Hannah

Yes, it is worth the tears to learn about the treatment of PTSD and how difficult it is to return to civilian life after battle. Unforgettable read.

Such a fantastic story! I cried so many times - if you are up for emotion, this book is totally worth the tears. This was the first book I read of this author. So excited to see she has a good collection of more books to read.

This is the first book I've read by this author. I as a rule avoid books about the war in Afghanistan because we see and hear so much about the horrors of it, just yesterday Fort Hood had another example of what it does to our men and women in the military, but I liked this book even though it had me sobbing.

Overall good book andI found the subject matter very current with what is being said on the news these days about PTSD. However, at times I found it be-laboured the point it was making and I just wanted to get on with the story.

This book about a wife who deploys to Iraq certainly gives you a picture of the effects of deployment on families and the returning soldiers. Great read!

In her bestselling novels Kristin Hannah has plumbed the depths of friendship, the loyalty of sisters, and the secrets mothers keep. Now, in her most emotionally powerful story yet, she explores the intimate landscape of a troubled marriage with this provocative and timely portrait of a husband and wife, in love and at war.
All marriages have a breaking point. All families have wounds. All wars have a cost. . . .
Like many couples, Michael and Jolene Zarkades have to face the pressures of everyday life---children, careers, bills, chores---even as their twelve-year marriage is falling apart. Then an unexpected deployment sends Jolene deep into harm’s way and leaves defense attorney Michael at home, unaccustomed to being a single parent to their two girls. As a mother, it agonizes Jolene to leave her family, but as a solider she has always understood the true meaning of duty. In her letters home, she paints a rose-colored version of her life on the front lines, shielding her family from the truth. But war will change Jolene in ways that none of them could have foreseen. When tragedy strikes, Michael must face his darkest fear and fight a battle of his own---for everything that matters to his family.
At once a profoundly honest look at modern marriage and a dramatic exploration of the toll war takes on an ordinary American family, Home Front is a story of love, loss, heroism, honor, and ultimately, hope. "Good Reads.com
