A forty-ton truck hurtles out of control on a snowy country road, a teenage girl on horseback in its path. In a few terrible seconds the life of a family is shattered. And a mother's quest begins--to save her maimed daughter and a horse driven mad by pain. It is an odyssey that will bring her to The Horse Whisperer. He is the stuff of legend. His voice can calm wild horses and his touch heals broken spirits. For secrets uttered softly into pricked and troubled ears, such men were once called Whisperers. I like both the movie and the book, I dont like the ending of the movie or the book. I know it’s bad but I wanted Tom and Annie to be together forever on the ranch. It’s probably because Robert Redford plays Tom in the movie and I love Robert Redford.

I liked the story about the girl and the horse, but am not a fan of love stories centered around adultery (old fashioned, I guess). And the ending - so ironic and tragic and...not really believable, IMO. I just don't believe the characters would have reacted the way they did in this story to their situation. I don't want to put in any spoilers, just suffice it to say I find a book more enjoyable if it's believable - YMMV. A good read nonetheless.

The book sucks you right in, and in many aspects it is far deeper than the movie. I think the movie tried to picture Tom more of a macho cowboy than he is in the book. I also loved underlying stories and character evolvement described in the book. Sometimes, though, Annie is shown too much of a damsel in distress, with her many strengths minimized. Her weeping over her unborn babies especially irked me.

I liked it better than the movie - the ending is different.
