a seemingly normal clean-cut guy's life is turned upside down when his long-lost sister comes to town and drama ensues...

Reading from a script so natural it sounds ad-libbed leads Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan bravely bare body and soul. Their incredible performances give writer/director Steve McQueen’s profoundly unhappy story about two isolated souls seeking connection a dramatic punch which leaves you sitting glassy-eyed through the closing credits. Scenes of explicit sexuality are rendered melancholic, a score of orchestral arrangements and disco tunes sound mournful, and Carey Mulligan’s unbelievable torch song rendition of “New York, New York” even has co-star Fassbender wiping unrehearsed tears from his eyes. Compassionate towards its characters yet never lenient, Shame’s sense of grief and emotional sabotage backed by impersonal urban settings may not leave you feeling good, but it will leave you...feeling.

Great acting by the main characters. Michael Fassbender portrays the anguish over his dissatisfied sex-life brilliantly through his eyes and facial expressions. How sad that Brandon's addiction is so all-out desperate that the joy in his life, both in sex and in choice of partners, doesn't exist. May never have... one can only speculate. Some people just choose not to deal with their issues, so that’s what this film is all about...

Apparent traumatized man (Fassbender) and his similarly-situated sister conduct their lives in NYC through a series of meaningless sexual encounters in a vain effort to bury (or at lest mask) their damaged psychs. While I'm sure most New Yorkers are good folks, this movie portray a big segment of them as sluts, whores, gays, and other emotionally-damaged people who spend their time seeking "stranger-sex" non-stop.

I thought I was going to absolutely hate this movie from some of the descriptions here, but nothing could be further from the truth.

On top of being flat-out intelligent and well-written, this film is VERY subtle and nuanced, which is why it was so, so good.

This is absolutely NOT a porn flick by any stretch of the imagination--you really end up sympathizing tremendously with both the lead characters (Brandon and his sister), and why they do what they do. Brandon's desperation to his addiction is apparent from the start.

If you are the type of person who needs your movies simple, linear or explained to you, you won't like this film. But if you enjoy understatement and "showing and feeling" rather than telling, talking and explanation, you'll really, really like this one. McQueen did a helluva job here.

A very pleasant surprise--I don't watch many movies, but I'm glad I checked this one out. If you have any doubts, check out the Amazon reviews ( or the Wikipedia entry for the film (

This is a 2011 British film co-written and directed by Steve McQueen, starring Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan.
The film's explicit sexual scenes are like an adult movie.
Altough the director might have been trying to depict the traumatic experiences of the brother and his younger wayward sister, the film seems to be a total flop because it doesn't show any meaningful and understandable scenes.
The director doesn't seem to know how to make a movie.
What a shame! :-)
It was a complete waste of my time.

A sad and depressing commentary on our sex-obsessed culture pushed to its logical extreme. I found it hard to watch such a display of relentless self-destruction. Good acting, intelligent script. A movie about sex which is completely lacking in eroticism.

Michael Fassbender is a martyr to his sexual urges for 101 minutes of your time. There is a germ of something important here, but nothing develops. You will know all there is to know about the characters in the first quarter hour.
