I took out Season One of “Magic City” based on a random mention comparing it favorably to “Mad Men.” Given my huge admiration for the latter, I was anxious to view the former and see what generated such high praise.

I could only make it through one episode.

Though I am more than well aware that this is not a fair sample and there was a chance that it could get better, there were plenty of reasons not to go forward just from this one segment.

This show was almost completely derivative and wore its sources proudly on its sleeve. Drawing shamelessly on The Godfather, The Sopranos and Mad Men.

Okay, I get it. Since The Godfather stylishly equated mob business-as-usual with the price of doing business in post-WWII, entrepreneurial America, we have been steadily pounded with the ideology of Milton Friedman and his mantras of the free-market. So, of course, we as an audience should identify with the poor mob businessman being put-upon by those bully union thugs and the inept law enforcement types who just seem to live for spoiling the party.

The show wants all the sheen and glamour from the Age of Camelot without any of the heavy lifting of plot development, interesting characters or more than passable dialogue. Lots of unlikeable people here so there sure as heck should be something interesting going on to keep my interest. It didn't. Can't say I'm sad that the series died an ignoble death seeing what I did of it...

Set in Miami Beach Florida in 1959 Magic City focuses on the life of Ike Evans and his family as they run the fabulous resort hotel the Miramar Playa. Ike has a beautiful second wife, two sons and one daughter from his first marriage as well as an entourage of faithful hotel employees. Ike manages the successful hotel but he eventually gets into financial and legal trouble. Unfortunately Ike made a bad financial deal with Ben "The Butcher" Diamond who is a mobster and minority owner of the Miramar Playa. Throughout season one of Magic City there are plenty of interesting storylines as well as explicit sex and violence.
