The Goldberg Variations for harpsichord are a pinnacle of Bach's compositional output. Like many of Bach's works, it has been transcribed for many different solo instruments and instrumental combinations. Fretwork's version for viol consort is one of the most unusual, in that it looks backward in time instead of forward.

Splendid transcription of the Goldberg Variations by harpist Catrin Finch that, to my ear, surpasses the keyboard original. Despite the brilliance of Glenn Gould, Keith Jarrett, and other interpreters, I've always found the piano or harpsichord GV recordings to be too hollow, too overtly mathematical to listen to for more than a handful of variations at a time. Yet Ms. Finch's version was and is completely captivating -- at once musically rigorous and meditative. And difficult to tear oneself away from.

Simone Dinnerstein's Goldberg Variations just sings. Alive, expressive, and emotive--much more than the typical Bach recital. Bach is so much more than math, and the beauty in his music awakens in Dinnerstein's rendition.
