It takes audiences deep into the backwaters of steamy 1960s South Florida, as investigative reporter Ward Jansen and his partner Yardley Acheman chase a sensational, career-making story. With the help of Ward's younger brother Jack and sultry death-row groupie Charlotte Bless, the pair tries to prove violent swamp-dweller Hillary Van Wetter was framed for the murder of a corrupt local sheriff.

A very interesting movie that I picked simply because of the characters/actors depicted on the cover. Zac played really well and real easy to look at.

In the yin and yang of life one might find themselves standing on a particular side of an issue. I like the Van Morison song about the philosopher's stone: somehow getting the gold out of ordinary life with all its suffering. But 'Precious' director, in the DVD extras, reveals his fondness for giving voice to those not often heard from. Perhaps future work from him will bring him closer to realizing the humanity of these under represented types. Else, the appeal will be somewhat narrow, though there will always be some audience for the morbid.

No spoilers here. This film is not for children, or people who can't decipher sub-text or can't watch the darker side of life. Man, this film is twisted every which way, and worth the weird ride. Zac Efron surprises with a depth that's unsuspected. Other talented, well-known actors, Nicole Kidman, John Cusack, Matthew McConaughey, and a lovely bit by Macy Gray, in deeply disturbing roles. Well, it's not a pretty film, but dang, it's a good one.

very deep movie in which you must pay attention at all times. I came away feeling kind of empty, that's not to say I did not enjoy it, I just had a few questions unanswered. I thought it was well acted by everyone though, who would have thought an Australian woman could do such a great job as a sleazy southern gal.

Many say this film is "trash". I agree it is trash...but GREAT trash. It's so raw. It shows the worst of people...their enormous weaknesses and flaws. It's slap-you-in-your-face real. It's not afraid to tread the dark sides of human personalities. It's all this "trash" that drew me in deeper and deeper. This movie and its characters will stick in your mind. There are scenes that intense, completely shocking, vulgar, gory and absolutely insane. The director took a no-holds-barred approach to this movie, which just added the depth of the characters and seeing how truly messed up they are.

It's well-directed. The cinematography is amazing. I applaud the acting of Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, John Cusack AND Macy Grey. This is the best performance from Zac I have seen yet...far from his High School Musical years. I think he could grow in a truly great actor if he keeps stretching himself.

This movie is not for the faint of heart or queasy. It's not for children at all. If you're looking for a wholesome, uplifting movie...DO NOT watch this movie.

Oddly entitled flick that's well worth watching.
Matthew McConaughey has pretty nearly vindicated himself for me after his unforgivably vapid Fool's Gold. Here he again (as with The Lincoln Lawyer and Killer Joe) plays a gritty part, and well. Zak Efron also acquits himself grandly with some real acting, and ditto for John Cusack, who seems forever to be looking for some niche to parlay his skills. He goes well against type to play a snake, and convincingly. Lastly, nice to see the likes of Nicole Kidman wanting to work a smallish but meaty part as an addled blonde trollop with a thing for prisoners.
It's gritty and sometimes a bit gory, but makes for an unusual tale well told and characters you may recall long after the end.
We have a topflight cast in what at first appears to be a cheap production. But this only reflects the rough setting, tale and characters--almost all of whom reek of something irredemable.
Do give this a patient try; though not quite superb there's much that's rewarding.

A disturbing jaw-dropping story on the ugly side of human characters. The all star cast somehow made the movie plausible. (What's with this perverse genre of movies of late - Paperboy, Killer Joe, The Killer Inside me.)

It was extremely crude and I didn't get why that peroxide blonde woman (who was a flake) was involved with that convict.
The younger guy had no self respect to go for a woman like her knowing how she was.
It was a terrible movie.
