Funny and/or cruel???

I think the projects spearheaded by Gervais-Merchant are often very funny... but sometimes, the humor seems to be a "cost". As in AnIdiotAbroad, Life'sTooShort has too many moments bordering on the cruel, which can make it (very) uncomfortable viewing. When the same formula is applied to themselves, as in HelloLadies ( no Gervais), hilarity frequently ensues, but in Life'sTooShort, too often it seems that we're not laughing with the main protagonist... but laughing at him. Tasteless comedy can be fun ... but cruel comedy??? ... may-be not so much. I believe that I prefer Merchant without Gervais.

Good writing, acting & "laugh out loud" funny.
