Even though the writer/director has borrowed extensively from the best of the Sci-Fi/Horror genre, "Beyond the Black Rainbow" is cinema as provocative art form, as nostalgia and homage, a mood piece that digs deep into the darkest parts of the human psyche to create a film that covers two decades of institutional abuse. The music, the colors, the disturbing emotions and many unanswered questions will linger in your mind long after the film is done.

A truly crappy film.
Rambling, moronic dialogue. Long, static, non-moving camera shots pretending to be sophisticated and arty (like "2001, A Space Odyssey") but came across as just plain silly.
I had a gigantic 30 minute yawn, then had to fast forward the rest before my mind melted.

Almost incomprehensible from the outset..I agree with many reviewers out there that BtBR would have been better off as a short film. Too many scenes in this movie felt far too drawn out and somewhat plodding. Visually the movie is indeed interesting , and the soundtrack was particulary well done. But be warned, this is more of "arty" movie , and will require patience upon viewing.

Nothing new in this movie as far as special effects that we haven’t seen 1000 times before. The movie was very cheaply made cheaply acted also in other words, it was a dumb movie.

'Beyond the Black Rainbow' is a mind-bending science fiction film which will be appreciated by those who like their films surreal and dream-like with a dash of psychedelic thrown in (such as 2001: A Space Odyssey; Stalker; Dark City; THX1138; Altered States; Solaris etc). This is film-making at its most cerebral and sublime. With brilliant cinematography, stunning soundtrack and a vivid imagination, this film would have made Stanley Kubrick and David Cronenberg proud. If you don't worry too much about plots, logic and explanations and love cinema more for the right mood, strange characters, high quality visuals and soundtrack, which combine to make a strong impression, then prepare to be spell-bound.

This was a tough one to rate. I feel like I will likely watch it again (which I will generally give 4 stars) but it just wasn't good enough to even give 3 1/2. This movie looks great if you like the late 70's/early 80's sci-fi/horror look. The soundtrack is awesomely 80's synth. There is very little dialogue. the movie moves at a snails pace. The story isn't all that good. The male lead is creepy and effective. Trippy.

Watch the trailer 1st - this will give you a better idea of whether or not it's for you. I loved it - except for the ending which was simply tragic. It's a huge nod to the Kubrick-style sci-fi of the late 60's and 70's and it accomplishes this goal extremely well. Definitely check it out - but it's definitely not for everyone.

This is the first time in my life that I turned off a video after only watching 10 minutes of it.... agree with JLouie... total waste of time. Do not watch.
