Callie loves theater. And while she would totally try out for her middle school's production of Moon Over Mississippi, she's a terrible singer. Instead she's the set designer for the stage crew, and this year she's determined to create a set worthy of Broadway on a middle-school budget. But how can she, when she doesn't know much about carpentry, ticket sales are down, and the crew members are having trouble working together? Not to mention the onstage AND offstage drama that occurs once the actors are chosen, and when two cute brothers enter the picture, things get even crazier!

Reasons: banned and challenged for including LGBTQIA+ characters and themes

Drama on stage and off. A perfect middle grade read, especially for theater geeks.

List - LGBT+ Books for Kids!
ArapahoeTed Jun 18, 2018

Great for theatre lovers, actors, writers, readers, sentient beings, librarians, etc... Winner of the American Library Association's Stonewall Honors Award for LGBT+ Youth literature, and one of the most frequently challenged books in the United States!

This popular graphic novel has been challenged and banned in schools because it includes LGBT characters and was considered “confusing.”

I really enjoyed this! As a former theatre kid, I can attest that this is exactly what it was like, save maybe the extremely. The drama of being a pre-teen is certainly well portrayed in the high paced world of middle school theatre.

I love this book soooooo much!!
And if you think being gay or lesbian or bisexual is a bad thing,
I don’t know what kind of life you live, but having feelings for the same sex is perfectly normal;
We’ve just been used to other things so it seems weird✌️
Anyway.....
GREAT book!!!🥳🥳

This book was very calm and fun because you never know what going to happen next and had lost of fun parts. It also, had a lot of drama. In conclusion this book was very fun to read.

This book is really good. This book discusses the topic that most children don't know about in such an excepting way.

Drama tells the story of a middle schooler named Callie going through normal school drama. She deals with love, friends, and the struggles of being a tween. This is very relatable because I also dealt with drama similar to this. I understand the struggles she went through. Drama also tells a very nice message to tweens going through the same things that it will get better, and it won’t last forever. I recommend this to tweens, and those who are going through any kind of drama related to this, and give it a 5/5. @Gummibee11 of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

Teen years are filled with 'drama' and the occasional laughter and heartbreak.

The title Drama can refer either to the fact that the junior high characters in this book are in their school drama club, or to the fact that they experience a lot of relationship drama. Callie, the main character, develops crushes at the drop of a hat, and is therefore often disappointed. The story feels true to junior high life--complicated, yet full of exuberance. The fun, colorful illustrations reflect this exuberant spirit. Author Raina Telgemeier drew on many of her own teenage experiences when she wrote this story, as she explains in a note at the back of the book.
A third (and perhaps unintentional) meaning for the title could be that there is a lot of drama surrounding this book. Many people have tried to ban it, because it includes a few gay characters. Banned Book Week would be a good time to read this book...but it's such a fun, quick read, that any time would be a good time to read it, actually.

I didn't expect Raina to make a graphic novel like this after amazing books like Smile, and Sisters. I think the book would have been great, but I feel like Raina was trying to push her personal feelings on a topic that most kids shouldn't even have on their minds right now. If she had left that out, the book would have been fine. I'm kind of disappointed in her because when I had Smile, my ten and eight year old siblings read it too and thought it was great, so when I got Drama, they read it and had no idea of what they were reading. Parents, I highly suggest that you look into this book before ordering/buying this book for your child. A child's mind is like plato kept in a bag, its moldable, but it doesn't dry out. -JDW 12yrs old.

Callie, is a complete theater geek. There's just one problem; she can't sing. So instead she's part of the production and loves making sets. For the school's production of Moon Over Mississippi she's overflowing with ideas about what to do. As the play takes up most of her and all her friends time they practically spend all their time in the theatre. She meets lots of friends on the way (and loses a few too) as she's trying her best to put on the best production possible. Will it work it? And will she admit her feelings to her crush?
