The private-detective business starts out badly for former Phoenix Deputy David Mapstone and his old friend Sheriff Mike Peralta. Mapstone and Peralta are hired to investigate the suspicious death of a young Arizona woman who fell from a condo tower in San Diego. The police call Grace Hunter's death a suicide, but the client, who is shot after hiring them and is found with multiple driver's licenses, doesn't agree. In San Diego, Mapstone finds Grace's boyfriend, who is trying to care for their baby. He, too, hires the pair to solve Grace's death. Their work reveals that this was no suicide, and Grace proves to be only the first victim of a murderous spree that reaches into the world of high-priced call girls, their millionaire clients, the white supremacist movement and a high stakes kidnapping.

" A big smile played across her face. 'Until she needed him. Come on, Mapstone, don't be naive. Babies are expensive and there's college coming right up on a parent. You probably have kids, so you understand. She hadn't even started her job at Qualcomm. Her bank account was drawn way down, only six hundred dollars.' " " He took off his sunglasses and rubbed his eyes. 'I have my ways, Mapstone.'/ 'I bet./ He slipped the shift into drive and rolled back to Seventh Street./ ' Wait!' It was an inane blurt, but it came out anyway. Anything to stop this circus. I knew it was too late, even though I had a bad feeling about going in with so many cops, so much firepower. . . I looked back with mixed emotions at the gathering army, hoping he was making the right call." " Lindsey and I had tickets to Los Angeles, where we would catch the Coast Starlight to Seattle. We had a sleeping compartment reserved. I carried a bag full of books."
