15 Days Without A Head is a fairly smart book about trying to figure things out on your own. As soon as the protagonist’s mother unexpectedly vanishes with no indication that something’s going on, the protagonist slowly starts losing his mind, and the cockroach symbolism (that they can live for up to a week without a head) drills itself into your brain. Not only does he have to look for his mother, but he also has to pretend she is still alive for others.
I don’t find it to be a story for the ages, but what it does right, it does really well. 15 Days Without A Head gets a recommendation from me and a 4 out of 5.

A fifteen-year-old boy struggles to take care of his little brother and avoid getting taken away by the British equivalent of CPS when his alcoholic mother goes missing. He also searches for his mum. Engagingly written. The story is realistic without being overly depressing and sweet without being overly sentimental. I had to take it with me on the bus (not something I usually do!) to see how it turned out.
