A professor of history and the noted author and editor of several books on the civil rights struggle, Dr. Clayborne Carson was selected by the estate of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to edit and publish Dr. King's papers. Drawing upon an unprecedented archive of King's own words--including unpublished letters and diaries, as well as video footage and recordings--Dr. Carson creates an unforgettable self-portrait of Dr. King. In his own vivid, compassionate voice, here is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as student, minister, husband, father, and world leader . . . as well as a rich, moving chronicle of a people and a nation in the face of powerful--and still resonating--change.

Though Dr. King never penned an autobiography, historian Clayborne Carson arranged primary works from King in an incredibly well-received manner that ties together the various strands of MLK's life.

Though this is not a book that is really written by Martin Luther King, Jr, it is a compilation of King’s writings. This book is extremely insightful into King’s views, and the hardships of black men and women during his time period. The book really brings King into a vivid picture of what he really was and what he really stood for. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in diving into King’s life and beliefs.

Not an autobiography in the traditional sense, but rather a selection of personal papers, letters and speeches that trace Martin Luther King's growth in faith and his dedication to non-violence as a method to bring about social justice for African Americans.
