Shark Week 2018

Without sharks, you take away the apex predator of the ocean, and you destroy the entire food chain. —Peter Benchley, author of Jaws Dive in to all things sharks as we celebrate Shark Week's 30th anniversary. It's going to be fin-tastic! Start your week off by reading Jaws, the novel that started it all (or watch the film). Listen to Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror before seeing the film… (more)

From Library Staff

Believe it or not, this classic scary movie is rated PG. Be prepared for you tween to have reservations about the ocean, swimming pools and even bathtubs after watching!

When you hear this theme, get out of the water.

Jaws is rated PG, so make sure the littlest of kids have parental guidance for the many, many bloody shark attacks found in this classic horror film.

A giant great white shark wreaks havoc on swimmers.

Sharks and director Stephen Spielberg were a match made in horror heaven as this 1975 film grossed over $260 million. A cult film favorite! Adjusted for inflation, "Jaws" is the seventh-highest grossing domestic movie of all time.

One of the best American thrillers that captivated its audience with a scary, yet humanistic story (watch the police chief battle the mayor and local businesses who need the tourists for the local economy), and a now-infamous soundtrack.

This decidedly heavy-handed, $8 million monster movie (which earned back 25x its production costs within its first year of release) actually had me yawning uncontrollably within its first half-hour.

Following the very first shark attack (which was, by far, the best of the lot), Jaws' story steadily lost serious momentum as the dramatic edge of this tale spiraled hopelessly downward at a constant rate.

It's really hard for me to believe that Jaws actually thrilled audiences to pieces back in 1975. IMO - This Spielberg "Creature Feature" has got to be one of the most over-rated and undeservedly praised horror movies of all time.

In conclusion - Spielberg, as a director (then & now), is certainly far from being the genius film-maker that so many of his devoted fans make him out to be.

WOW THAT SHARK IS PURE EVIL MAN I READ THE BOOK OF I SURVIVED BOOK AND THE REAL BOOK THATS SHARK IS A DEMON OR DEVIL!! Hey what about the death of Joseph and Micheal Dunn the brothers and their friend Jerry!!and the death of Charles Vansant and the other Charles dude (Forgot his last name XD) heres how they died Mr.Vansant was from some other Place not in the U.S.A. he was there with his mom and dad and three sisters he also made a friend a golden retrever at the beach he went for a swim with his new friend and his new friend swam to shore while Vansant was still in the water then he felt something sharp grip on his leg then Alexander saw and came to help Alexander could see the sharks pure black eyes after saving him the hospital came and ASAP to the hospital his family was there when Vansant died! How the other Charles died Charles's worked at a hotel near the beach when it was his break time he would change into his swim suit and swim 10 yards away from shore he would swim till his mucels were sore and then the also felt something razor sharp griping on his leg its was the shark again!!!everybodysaw at the beach 12 women fainted and 12 men when over to help Charles when he was at the hospital he already died!!!!

The classic summer blockbuster. The shark and blood effects might seem genuinely corny and fake, but the intensity and thrill are all too real. The acting holds up very well too.

I rewatched this earnestly instead of just letting it play in the background for the thousandth time because it happens to be on TV, and I don’t have any complaints at all. It looks amazing, the acting’s amazing, the shark doesn’t move like a shark, but who the hell cares, it’s gigantic, it’s underwater, and it has a big mouth full of teeth. The attack in the estuary is so unsettling. Swimming sucks, I like cold weather better anyway.

After a young woman is eaten alive by a shark while staying at a beach resort, the local police want to shut the beach down in order to prevent further killings. However, the mayor doesn’t want to lose tourists and money so he tells the police to keep the shore open. This causes Matt and captain Quint to go out to sea in an attempt to capture the vicious beast. This 1975 film is the classic man vs. nature tale with the classic suspenseful music and one of the first major horror films. I would rate this movie 4/5 stars since it is fairly slow moving and I would recommend it to lovers of old films and sharks. @The_Reviewer of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library
