More of an ad for Aston-Martin cars than a Sherlock Holmes novel.

Pace the Publishers Weekly review on this page, I found this the most entertaining instalment yet in Barry Grant's series featuring a resurrected Sherlock Holmes. Here Sherlock matches wits with a mad scientist, a Flemingesque Swedish super-criminal, and media mogul, tabloid king, and unsavoury phone-hacker Gerald Gurloch (I wonder who that could be modelled on.) What a delight to see Sherlock outwitting cyber-criminals and tooling about with perhaps more enthusiasm than expertise in an Aston Martin! And what a delight that the high-wattage cyber-criminals are laid low by Boys' Own ruses involving hollow trees, schoolboy codes, and elementary disguises. As a bonus, Holmes's latter-day Watson, James Wilson, gets to prove his mettle in a solo expedition to a mysterious Caribbean island. Uniformly engaging and a perfect summer read.
