In November of 1999, Seattle broke into a full-scale state of emergency as thousands of peaceful protestors gathered in resistance to the World Trade Organization. The city's mayor, a SWAT cop on the streets and his pregnant wife, and four demonstrators are caught in the crossfire as their lives intersect in the ensuing riots. Stuart Townsend, in his debut writing and directing role, seamlessly merges actual footage of the devastating chaos with brilliant performances.

Eeeehhhhh. . . . not an especially adequate film, but then I was one of the demonstrators and I remember the cops acting illegally, as is usually the case.
The standout of the WTO in Seattle was filmed by an excellent documentary shown at Volunteer Park, which captured an impromptu debate by a highly educated and well-informed street activist, and some bloody idiot from Madrona Capital [local investment firm] - - the clown from Madrona claimed that // . . . Bill Gates invented the Internet to solve world poverty \\ [you simply cannot make this stuff up, and I hope he was the only stoner at Madrona [the stoners from Madrona, nice ring, that?]. Glad I learned to rappel in the military. [Sidebar: I cannot help remembering that the same demographic which elected Chinese-American Gary Locke to be governor, was supposed to have ignored the best councilmember we ever had back then, Charlie Chong, and instead supposedly elected that Great Unknown [and phony self-described former activist], Paul Schell, a k a Paul Schlacterhausen, who did not even reside in Seattle, and there was elected illegally [probably on multiple levels]!

This movie did its job: tell the world that how ugly politicians and corporations are. This movie is about protests about WTO in Seattle. Politicians & corporations claimed that they asked the police - based on "law" - to arrest the "peaceful" demonstrators; & the police - as usual - just followed "orders" & arrested the peaceful public even though the policemen knew the public did no wrong. Politicians & corporations just wanted huge profit even though depriving the weak people & countries. The movie moved fast, not boring at all, & quite entertaining in fact.

This film reminded me of my experience of being tear-gassed in the middle of a demonstration on the streets of Chicago during the '68 Democratic Convention. I was totally blinded in the midst of the noisy chaos and felt so helpless !!,.. until two fleeing strangers grabbed me by the arms, and told me "just keep running",.. and they ran me out of the billy-clubbing area . I wish that someone would make a film like this about the Battle of Chicago.

The powers that be would have you not watch this movie. For that alone it is worth it. Good mix of dramatic with real footage.

This movie has a flawed plot. A Seattle cop assaults a demonstrator and then the demonstrator tells him that the assault was justified, because the cop was having a bad day. The producers of this film were afraid to give the real facts, because they might anger the World Trade Organisation. Good acting by Woody Haroldson, though!

I really enjoyed this movie. It educated me on the power the World Trade Organization holds, its corporate agenda and its abuses. It shows that people can effect change.
