I read this for the "Orange On The Cover" part of my 2020 reading challenge. I loved it, the artwork was simple and cute and the ants were hilarious. I really enjoyed that they were Carpenter ants and wore hard hats.

As a group of ants dig holes in a stump, they see a wide range of colors. What exactly is waiting outside for them?
An imaginative story for imaginative readers.

Hall's illustrations are strongly reminiscent of Eric Carle's best work, with bright colors and angular shapes. He even tips a hat to The Very Hungry Catepillar by making the holes in the tree stump actual holes in the pages.

The punchlines that arrive with each new hue are so silly that parents and children alike will want to return to the ants' mystery again and again.

The book is outstanding because of the rainbow I got to see at the end because of all the colors the aardvark was turning.
