Mad World is a highly entertaining oral history that celebrates the New Wave music phenomenon of the 1980s via new interviews with 35 of the most notable artists of the period. Each chapter begins with a discussion of their most popular song but leads to stories of their history and place in the scene, ultimately painting a vivid picture of this colorful, idiosyncratic time. Mixtape suggestions, fashion sidebars, and quotes from famous contemporary admirers help fill out the fun. Participants include members of Duran Duran, New Order, The Smiths, Tears for Fears, Adam Ant, Echo and the Bunnymen, Devo, ABC, Spandau Ballet, A Flock of Seagulls, Thompson Twins, and INXS.

As they say, if you can remember the 80s, well, you know they weren't that great. Yet people can't seem to stop doing films and TV shows (I'm watching Netflix "GLOW" as I type this.) set in the era and writing books about the pop culture, especially the music and movies. This frivolous book focuses on "New Wave" songs from the decade and, if you're a fan, you might quibble with their definition (The Smiths are not New Wave.) and with the authors' choices, but that's the point of books like this. Still, New Order, Depeche Mode, and Echo, but no Cure? The authors did manage to interview many of the participants and there are some great pictures. Does this book need to exist? Not really, but it's fun. Foreword by Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes and afterword by Moby (why?). If you love the 80s, you should run like Flock of Seagulls to get this.
