Malkovich can afford to be selective in the projects that he undertakes---and this one was surprisingly good. Not you run-of-the-mill mindless violent dreck at all.....a moralistic tale, beautifully photographed in a harsh environment. The younger supporting cast was nothing short of brilliant. Highly recommended.

Still worth watching and pretty good overall, but it would have been considerably better if the plot revolved around the grandfather (Malkovich) and the story thread about the grandson had just been relegated to a side story within the film. The plot mainly revolved around the grandson and his friends, which were played by foreign actors who just aren't on the same level as Malkovich. So for me, the parts of the film that didn't contain Malkovich suffered somewhat.
