Filmed over 18 months, this documentary is an indelible portrait of a complex male friendship rarely depicted on screen. Sam Shepard and Johnny Dark met in New York in the early 1960s and, despite leading very different lives, remained close friends. Shepard became a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright and an Academy Award-nominated actor, while Dark was a homebody who supported himself with odd jobs. Nevertheless, he and Dark continued writing to each other, amassing hundreds of letters.

I think many people would find this documentary too slow or aimless, but I thought it was pretty good. Sam Shepard and his best friend, who also happens to be his former father-in-law, have very different approaches to life. Their longtime friendship and correspondence through letters were interesting to me, though my mind started to wander a bit by the end. I recommend Shepard & Dark for those who like documentaries and/or Sam Shepard.
