By July 1914, the ties between Kezia and Thea, friends since girlhood, have become strained; by Thea's passionate embrace of women's suffrage, and by the imminent marriage of Kezia to Thea's brother, Tom, who runs the family farm. When Tom enlists to fight for his country and Thea is drawn reluctantly onto the battlefield, the farm becomes Kezia's responsibility. Each must find a way to endure the ensuing cataclysm and turmoil.

I had my doubts since it isn't a Maisie Dobbs novel, but I got into the rhythm of the characters ( esp. Kezia and Theo) and the farm. Winespear writes characters who are very egalitarian and down-to-earth. Wonder if she's Quaker?

Winspear crafts a World War I tale which lets us see how the fighting affected those Britains who left to serve – soldiers, female ambulance drivers and chaplains – and those who stayed behind. Kezia manages the operation of the farm while her husband, Tom, is away and carefully describes recipes to give him a taste of home cooking, if only in his mind. Tom and his fellow soldiers look forward to her culinary adventures, which Tom reads aloud. Tom’s harassment by the sergeant leads to dramatic events. This is the second Winspear book I have read, and I love her details of the era.
