this is my fav book i wrote a report/ project for school
i found the first chapters boring....
I found this book quite amazing. I loved the gusto of the earlier experiences in Zimbabwe, and I felt with Will through her early days at the boarding school.
I felt that the period when she left the boarding school was a rite of passage, because by the time she was a few days on her own she was starting to use some of the things she had learned there.
I really was impressed with the 'voice' of Katerine Rundell. I will be making sure to read her previous book.
I liked this, but couldn't quite like it as much as I wanted to. It's the story of a young girl raised in Zimbabwe who is sent off to boarding school in London after the death of her father, thanks to her new guardian's horrible wife. There's a lot to like here--the protagonist, Will, has a very strong voice, and there's some nice messaging going on here--but I was frustrated by some of the overdone elements of the plot (evil stepmother, horrid boarding school bullies) and I found Will's cluelessness about the modern world frustrating at times...I almost wonder if this would have worked better as historical fiction, when I could have found her cluelessness about the wider world more understandable. Still, a good novel, worth a read.
