Even after reading an engaging Globe and Mail interview with interior designer Judith Wilson, I admit I had low hopes for Wilson's newest book. "Think Home: Everything You Need to Plan and Create Your Perfect Home" boasts such a lofty, over-promising title that I expected pictures of unattainable, pretentious homes accompanied by forgettable text. Leafing through the pages, however, I discovered a collection of unexpected design advice: interesting, counterintuitive ideas that shouldn't work but do.

Wilson turns conventional decorating advice on its head. As her title implies, she constantly implores her reader to think: think pattern, think texture, think colour. One page features a vintage, celery-green sofa in front of patterned, acid lime wallpaper. And it's brilliant. Though most rooms have neutral walls and get life from colourful furniture, Wilson advises putting an intense tone on the walls and keeping furnishings black, grey, cream and white.

Make large rooms spare and scale up compact ones. The bigger the pattern and the more of it you use, the less overwhelming it seems. Art walls don't have to be white; try black or charcoal instead. Such wonderfully offbeat tips to create stunning spaces.
