"Fourteen years before Kirsten Gillibrand succeeded Hillary Rodham Clinton as senator from New York, she heard her future mentor say these life-changing words: 'Decisions are being made every day in Washington, and if you are not part of those decisions, you might not like what they decide, and you'll have no one to blame but yourself.' A young corporate lawyer at the time, Gillibrand felt as if she'd been struck by lightning. She instantly knew that her voice--all women's voices--were essential to shaping the future of this country, and that she had a greater purpose in life: to speak up and effect change. Now, in this extraordinary memoir, the senator, wife, and mother of two recounts her personal journey in public service and galvanizes women to reach beyond their busy lives and make a meaningful difference in the world around them."-- Provided by publisher.

Gillibrand is a former tobacco attorney who changed from moderate to liberal when she rose from a conservative New York House district to take Hillary's old Senate seat. She wants to be the Democrat nominee in 2020, and is currently seeking notoriety by ostentatiously attacking Trump.
--- I don't recommend this book, but if you want it, you might as well hear the Audio version as I did, so you can assess Gillibrand's voice and manner. I will repeat my Audio comment.
--- Hillary wrote a foreward, read by an actress, troweling on praise to a nauseous level. Gillibrand then reads her book in a childish, petulant voice reminiscent of Dan Quayle.
--- Women should have everything. They must take over the country and change it to their own liking. All women must join in the quest for self-advantage.
--- She boasts of tough female forebears -- her karate-expert mother, and her valiant grandmother who threw her drunken grandfather out. Gillibrand owes her own superior toughness to these rugged predecessors.
--- To prove how tough she is, Gillibrand sprinkles her narrative with profanities, and revels in her use of "f__k" in addressing senior colleagues, reading aloud with pride and pleasure -- a truly feminine contemporary female leader.
--- I gave up after a few minutes, feeling I had had enough.

so nice to read a book by a political person that isn't just a smear job on someone else. this author talks about what she is interested in and how she has tried to make a difference rather than accusing everyone else of being and idiot or disloyal. good autobiographical read

I was looking for hope for the future, since things in D.C seem so dysfunctional and dystopian. I found it here. This book is the voice of a sane, sensible person who cares about important issues and pushes hard for them in a non-combative or adversarial way. A refreshing voice of reason, Senator Gillibrand is someone to watch.
