Shortlisted for the CWA Gold Dagger for Best Crime Novel of the Year

From breakout thriller writer Paula Daly, the story of a husband and wife and the devious best friend who comes between them.

Natty and Sean have a rock-solid marriage--with two daughters, a successful business, and a beautiful house, they are a model family. When their younger daughter falls ill on a school trip, Natty rushes to her side. Luckily, Natty's best friend from college, Eve, is visiting and offers to stay with Sean to lend a hand in the household. But Natty returns home to find that Eve has taken to family life a little too well: Sean has fallen in love with her. With no choice but to put on a brave face, Natty attempts to start anew--yet no matter how hard she tries to set herself upright, Eve is there to knock her down again. Then Natty receives a mysterious note that says Eve has done this before--more than once--and the consequences were fatal. On a mission to reveal Eve as a vindictive serial mistress, Natty must navigate through a treacherous maze of secrets and lies that threatens her life and the safety of her loved ones.

Oh, oh, oh. Another domestic thriller from Daly ("Just What Kind of Mother Are You?"), the kind where bad judgement and impulse keep adding on to the suspense, and a really bad person takes advantage of another who 's more just confused and distracted.

Keep your Friends Close grabbed me from the first page. I literally couldn’t put it down.

The story is mostly told from two contrasting viewpoints: Natty, the wife who is totally confident of her husband’s love, and Eve, the friend who sets out to deliberately steal him away.

Natty is away from home for only two weeks for a family emergency. When she leaves home Sean loves only her, has actually never thought about straying. When she comes home, the first thing he does is tell her he is in love with Eve and wants a divorce. By the next day, Eve is living in Natty’s house with Natty’s husband and children and making her position clear at the business Natty has built. Natty is banished to her father’s spare bedroom, ashamed to show her face because she knows the whole town is talking.

The tension builds chapter by chapter, Eve’s viewpoint allows the reader to know more than Natty does, and your heart aches for her as she bumbles along and starts to figure things out.

The story made me think about how easily a person without principles can find a weakness to exploit in even the most solid relationship.

I won’t say more about the plot because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. I can say I was not disappointed in the end and would be happy to read a sequel.

I just read the first chapter and could see that there would be lots if illicit sex in this book. Not my kind of novel !

This storyline made me so mad that I had to keep reminding myself that it was fiction. Therefore, proof it was well written!

The premise of this book is a good one- a friend comes to stay and due to a family situation the wife has to go to France- and the friend stays in the family home and takes over her life, the husband, the kids, everything. The wife, in trying to show to her husband and the police what has, and is happening, makes her look like a paranoid, unstable and increasingly crazy person.
A really well written novel that has the main characters drawn exceptionally well in terms of the behaviour, the manipulation, the innuendo's and more importantly what actually gets left unsaid- which inflames the perception of paranoia. A great weekend read.

"Published in the U.K. earlier this year, this absorbing novel tells the story of Natty Wainwright, who returns home to England after a short trip abroad to care for her daughter. Once back, she finds that her husband has been seduced by an old friend, Eve, who'd agreed to "help out" during Natty's absence. Providing both Natty and Eve's points of view, this psychologically taut and suspenseful read offers rising tension as Natty's "perfect" life falls apart in front of her. It seems her life wasn't so perfect after all, and decades-old secrets lie at the bottom of Eve's plot to replace Natty entirely. "Fiendishly addictive," says The Guardian."
