Disclaimer: I listened to this as an audiobook, mostly while driving home from work in pitch black in a largely wooded area. Ambiance.

Man, this was a ride. I go back and forth with my opinion on King's writing style. For the most part, I prefer his short stories. This is the first novel of his I really fell in love with. The characterization of a nine year old girl was fantastic and I loved the idea that her "imaginary friend" was in the form of her puppy crush, which was absolutely adorable. That said, the hopelessness of being a little girl (albeit "tall for her age") lost in the woods, left to her own devices, to be so deeply terrifying and had a well-paced intensity.

On the ending (SPOILER FREE) I wanted more of an epilogue with the story, but I'm content with how everything played out. I think this is a good "starter" King book for those not looking for hair-raising horror tales, but don't expect his others to have a relatively positive ending.

a bit of a stretch... the voice of the 9 year old is not quite believable in this situation
