Kanon has a knack of selecting locations which are rife with moral ambiguity - Kruschev's Moscow, occupied post-War Berlin, and in this case, New Mexico at the height of the Manhattan Project. Murder and espionage, double lives and relationships betrayed, even secret sexualities, are all explored here, against the backdrop of the Holocaust and unleashing the power of atomic bombs. Kanon frequently conjures up fully cinematic story-lines, in this case probably a juicy, early Hitchcock in black and white and plenty of gray.
