A fresh and fun repackage of Wild Cards, Better Than Perfect launches a romantic new series from New York Times bestselling author Simone Elkeles. After getting kicked out of boarding school, bad boy Derek Fitzpatrick has no choice but to live with his ditzy stepmother while his military dad is deployed. Things quickly go from bad to worse when he finds out she plans to move them back to her childhood home in Illinois. Derek's counting the days before he can be on his own, and the last thing he needs is to get involved with someone else's family drama. Ashtyn Parker knows one thing for certain, people you care about leave without a backward glance. So when her older sister comes home after abandoning her ten years earlier, with her hot new stepson in tow, Ashtyn wants nothing to do with either of them. Then she comes up with a plan that would finally give her the chance to leave, but it requires trusting Derek, someone she barely knows, someone born to break the rules. Is she willing to put her heart on the line to try and get the future she wants?

Ashtyn Parker is not your ordinary seventeen year old girl. After all, you’ll most likely see her playing football on her high school team than gossip with her friends about her romantic interests. But everything changes when Ashtyn's sister comes back to Illinois with her new step son Derek, after he was expelled from boarding school. At first Ashtyn and Derek cannot stand one another. Ashtyn thinks that Derek is an arrogant and spoiled snob. While Derek believes that Ashtyn is an irritating, control freak. However, due to an unexpected twist of events, the two begin to fall in love with one another. Wild Card was my guilty-pleasure book. You know the kind of book that doesn’t have any drama or action, it’s just a care-free romance novel.

Simone Elkeles is by far one of my favorite authors and her books never fail to impress me. The Perfect Chemistry series is still probably my favorite of hers but this book is pretty similar (bad boy/ good girl forbidden romance...sound familiar?). I love that Ashtyn is a strong female lead character and not the typical clingy/needy girlfriend like so many teen books use. I also absolutely love how witty and sarcastic the author makes her characters! I actually had to keep myself from literally laughing out loud on several occasions! I really can't say enough good things about this author or her work. I'd recommend putting all her books on hold and having a marathon reading session during winter break because once you start reading her books, you get sucked in and can't stop! Enjoy!
