This book is essential for any Parker fan and an excellent way for new readers to make her acquaintance. It reprints her finest short stories and poems, along with some later articles and several of her excellent "Constant Reader" book reviews from the Depression-era glory days of the New Yorker.

Dorothy Parker's poetry and short prose pieces have been on my "to read" list for a while.

The introduction by Marion Meade is fabulous.

The poems and stories are more valuable as social and cultural history than as works of literature.

Even though Parker tends to say the same thing over and over again ad nauseam, I'm glad I persevered to the end. The best stories and monologues (there are about 3 or 4 good ones) are found mid-way through the volume.
