Decent end to the series, but I preferred Woman Who Rides Like a Man. That's likely because I was more interested in getting to know the characters, and that's the book in which Alanna grew the most. I actually liked the first half of this book better than the second - likely because the fights are the least interesting parts of these books for me. About three quarters of the way through, I was feeling quite let down - but it got better again in the last chapter or so.

This was a fantastic, satisfying end to the series. There were times when this was a little slow and I really enjoyed the second half of the novel when we got back to Tortall, but I was with Alanna every step of the way. The warrior woman she has become is incredible and inspiring. I am encouraged to read the rest of the books set in this world. I am so glad I reread this as an adult -- it was just as aspiring as it was when I was a young girl.

I loved this whole series, as a little girl. I have always remembered it fondly. Re-reading it as an adult - I wish I had left it as a child hood memory. Now that my taste has matured - its to simple. Good book for girls ages 10 - 14. Not so good for adults.

I read thw whole series and I think what I loved most about these books is how Alanna evolved though the series. It really shows how much a person can change though the years of growing up. This book was a light read the wrighting still was nothing too extraordinary otherwise, the plot was good and interesting.

Not good reading the LAST book of a series first, but OH WELL! It was an OK book . probably would have been better if I started with book one. Alanna was a very good female hero. There is romance, intrigue, unexpected twists , great loyalty--what else can you want. LIGHT READING
