Mr. Feist goes into macroeconomics on protagonist #1 Roo to loan money to his government to upcoming war with Emerald Queen's army. Most fantasy authors rarely goes into how to pay for a war & behind the scenes logistics. Kudos for him.
There's a economic limit from raising taxes on a purely agricultural based economy.
Meanwhile, Eric rises up from the rank in the army to scout & harass the Emerald's queen army as part of long term indirect strategy.
