No one is more surprised than Mattie Spenser herself when Luke Spenser, considered the great catch of their small Iowa town, asks her to marry him. Less than a month later, they are off in a covered wagon to build a home on the Colorado frontier. Mattie's only company is a slightly mysterious husband and her private journal, where she records the joys and frustrations not just of frontier life, but also of a new marriage to a handsome but distant stranger. As she and Luke make life together on the harsh and beautiful plains, Mattie learns some bitter truths about her husband and the girl he left behind and finds love where she least expects it. Dramatic and suspenseful, this is an unforgettable story of hardship, friendship and survival.

From Library Staff

Lucy loves Sandra Dallas and this book was no exception. This was a great portrayal of the hardships faced by early settlers in Colorado.

Historical fiction of a pioneer family in the Colorado Territory. Good portrayal of the hard life on the frontier for women including loneliness, illness, death, Indians, extreme weather, and so few resources. Mattie was a strong, stoic character and I enjoyed this well written description of her day-to-day life.

This book did what a good story is supposed to do. It transported me to another time and place and made me believe the characters were real.

Mattie is a plain woman, swept off her feet in Iowa by an Iowa man who is homesteading in CO. Right after Civil War. He is stuff and domineering, but not real bad, for the times. They take covered wagon out to CO and begin by living outdoors.
