Addie Baum was born in 1900 to immigrant parents who were unprepared for and suspicious of America. Growing up in Boston, Addie's intelligence and curiosity take her to a world her parents can't imagine: a world of short skirts and new opportunities for women. From the one-room apartment she shared with her family, to the library group for girls she joins, to her first, disastrous love affair, Addie recalls her adventures with compassion for the naive girl she was and a wicked sense of humor.

This novel is an extended conversation between an 85-year-old grandmother and her 22-year-old granddaughter who has just graduated from Harvard. While trying to answer the question, "How did you get to be the woman you are today?", Addie Baum, born in 1900 to immigrant parents, shares her personal history. From the settlement houses of the early 20th century through two world wars and post-war prosperity, countless family joys and tragedies have shaped Addie in many unseen ways. The listener also learns how Boston has changed and grown over nearly a century. Linda Lavin was a great narrator choice for this book!

A very nice story, especially suited to listening to on audio. This novel doesn't offer much in the way of plot, but is instead a lovely story about growing up in Boston in the early 1900's. The author tells the story so nicely. This was a relaxing and comforting read.

Very enjoyable and lovely audiobook. It feels very personal, like your own Grandma telling you about her life. Linda Lavin does a great job as the reader.
